Leave the lab (note the room #) Put the "DO NOT ENTER' sign on the outside door
Call EH&S or dial 911 and tell them you have a chemical spill
CHEMICAL PURCHASING
Order only exact amount to be usedPurchase chemicals in small bottles for easier management of unused chemicalsEstablish a centralized purchasing program for your area to monitor chemical purchases and avoid
duplicate ordersNote any properties that may preclude long term storage, such as organic peroxide formationUse suppliers who can provide quick delivery of small quantitiesEstablish an inventory for the chemicals in
your laboratory. Periodically update the inventory as chemicals are used and purchased.
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET (MSDS)
Every lab MUST have an MSDS for each chemical and gas in the lab. They must be available at all times for reference in the labs.
CHEMICAL STORAGE
SEGREGATE CHEMICALS—Flammable solvents from acids and oxidizers, inorganic acids from inorganic bases, nitric acid from organic acids, and inorganic acids from cyanide.LABEL PEROZIDE-FORMING chemicals with the date
received and the date opened.
PURCHASE SMALL QUANTITIES of chemicals; the cost of their disposal has become prohibitive.STORE over 10 gallons of flammable liquids only in an approved flammable storage cabinet
KEEP FLAMMABLES IN REFRIGERATORS or freezers that are listed as nonflammable or explosion proof.
SECURE COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDERS WITH DOUBLE CHAINS TO IMMOVABLE OBJECTS, PREFERABLY A WALL. Make sure that each cylinder with a regulator is individually secured.
ANCHOR all shelves and storage cabinets. Provide seismic bars on open chemical shelves.
READ MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets).
MAINTAIN a clean, organized work environment.
