Fire Safety

 BE PREPARED

Know the exit routes from your office, floor, and building.  Study these in advance. It is easy to become disoriented during an actual emergency.

Make sure that emergency numbers are posted on your telephone. Include your room number.

Keep a flashlight in your desk for use during any emergency. Check the batteries quarterly.

Report any unsafe conditions to the Fire Protection Division at once at 68680 or 52584

Keep lanes of egress clear.

Do not use extension cords, ungrounded plugs, and multiple outlet adapters for various small appliances.  These will  overload the electrical circuit.

Store hazardous materials in limited quantities and  keep them in an approved flammable liquid storage cabinet when storing more than 10 gallons.

Keep fire doors closed at all times.

Smoke only in permitted areas outside the building, and discard ashes in approved ashtrays.

HOW TO USE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER

While firmly grasping the extinguisher's handle, briskly pull the locking pin, breaking the plastic tip.

Firmly grasp the nozzle handle and point toward base of fire.

Move to within ten (10) feet from fire's base and squeeze handle, thereby releasing extinguisher's contents toward the base of the fire.

Continue extinguishing fire in a sweeping pattern across the base of the fire until the fire is out.

Once fire is out, alert others to all-clear condition, and clean-up broken glass, beakers, dry chemical powder, etc. If there are chemical spills, call EH&S to clean them up.

Notify your Lab Manager about the fire.

NOTE: If you put out a fire, report it to the UCLA Police Department by calling 911

.IF YOU ARE TRAPPED BY FIRE

Before opening any door, feel it near the top. If it is hot, do not open it.  Use another exit. If you should become trapped, do the following:

Call the Campus Police at 911 and tell them your exact location and your situation. They will call the Fire Department.

Place a blanket or similar article along the bottom of your door to keep out smoke.  If possible, wet the material first.

Hang a light colored material out the window to attract attention of rescue teams below. (Windows in E4 don't open)  DO NOT JUMP.If the door is not hot, open it cautiously. Stand behind the door and be prepared to close it quickly if there is excessive smoke.

Leave the area by using the nearest stairway that is clear of smoke.  Try all means of going down before going up.  Use the roof as a last resort.

Assemble outside in the evacuation area for your building. Do not re-enter the building until notified to do so by the Fire Department.
