Hazardous Waste

IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO DISPOSE OF WASTE DOWN THE DRAIN. You need to bring the waste down to the loading dock (bay door #4) on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month.  Environmental Health and Safety will be here between the hours of 3:00 and 3:30.  The waste must be in a sealed container, with the contents clearly marked. All containers must be properly labelled and tagged.  All contents (solid or liquid) must be identified and their quantities (or concentrations) stated.  A completed hazardous substance identification tag must be attached to each container.  If a tag is not attached, each container must be clearly labelled with the contents and quantity.  The container must be labeled in plain english, (not scientific notations).    Chemicals must be separated into compatible groups.  Liquids waste must be placed in containers with screw tops or sealed lids.   Leaking Containers will not be accepted. Dry waste must be thoroughly contained in double plastic bags and boxed when possible.  Packages with protruding glass will not be accepted.  Bottles and containers shall be free of exterior chemical contamination. This service is free to you.  "Unknown" chemicals will generally not be accepted.  The department must attempt to identify the "unknown".  If the substance cannot be identified, EH&S will accept the material and charge a fee of $50 per unknown for classification.
